Les Parages East West
A collaboration with Jeremy Dennis
Dance Film. 2021
15 minutes 45 seconds

This dance was filmed on West Woods of the Shinnecock Tribal Nation on November 9, 2021 right in between low tide and high tide in the early afternoon. West Woods is a forty acre of indigenous unceded land that is owned and stewarded by the Shinnecock Tribe. It is comprised of bay-facing beaches and woodlands that is actively used for social events, weddings and leisure.

The choreography stems from the indigenous spiritual belief that souls enter from the East and leave from the West. The dance is formalized around the diamond shapes of the body. The diamond corresponds to the idea of dynamic cardinal movement. The movements pay tribute to the deep time that connects this land, share & people. It is difficult to move slowly and balance on the sand. It is a tempo that comes from the site.
